Son of the'father of studio pottery' Bernard Leach, David Leach was born in Tokyo in 1911, and was first taught to pot not by his father but by legendary master potter Shoji Hamada. He studied at North Staffs Technical College and in 1930 joined the world renowned Leach Pottery where he stayed, on and off, for twenty-five years. He helped the family business in artistic, practical, technical and managerial capacities. It is widely accepted that David Leach made the'Leach Pottery' the well oiled machine that dominated Studio and Art Pottery for decades. In 1953 he headed the ceramics department of Loughborough College. He started the Aylesford Pottery in 1954, anding it over a year later to Colin Pearson. After the handover of Aylesford Pottery he moved to Bovey Tracey in Devon and set up the world famous Lowerdown Pottery. He was awarded the O. E in 1987, and is important for his development of porcelain suitable for studio pottery and his services to education.
David died in February, 2005. His three sons; John, Jeremy and Simon are all world renowned potters. In the world of studio pottery collectors and ceramicists David's work is considered equal (and by some, better) than his fathers work, showing exemplary skill and creating pots of extraordinary beauty. David is of course one of the finest names in the world of studio pottery and ceramics. All handmade, hand-fired studio pottery carries with it certain imperfections that occur during throwing and firing but these add character and are what set handmade studio pottery aside from mass-produced factory pottery.
